Diagnostics

Alongside the clinical neurological examination:

  • EEG (recording of brain waves)
  • Extracranial and transcranial Doppler ultrasound, colour-coded duplex ultrasound of the cerebral arteries
  • EMG and nerve conduction studies
  • Evoked potentials (VEP, AEP, SEP)
  • Cerebrospinal fluid analysis (lumbar puncture)
  • High-resolution ultrasound of nerves and muscles
  • Laboratory tests (blood work)
  • Neuropsychological testing
  • MRI and CT in close cooperation with radiology practices nearby

Risk assessment

  • Assessment of stroke risk
  • Assessment of the risk of degenerative brain disease (Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias)

Both assessments are private services and are billed according to the German scale of medical fees (GOÄ).

Botulinum toxin therapy

In this clinic botulinum toxin is used for dystonic movement disorders, hemifacial spasm, spasticity of the limbs and disorders of sweating. The substance is injected into the affected muscles or under the skin, where it temporarily reduces overactive muscle activity. In certain cases the injection is guided by EMG. The effect is limited in time, so treatment is usually repeated at intervals. Effects and possible side effects are discussed beforehand.

Conditions that may be suitable include:

  • Blepharospasm and Meige syndrome
  • Cervical dystonia (torticollis)
  • Other focal dystonias, such as writer’s cramp
  • Dystonic head tremor
  • Trigeminal neuralgia
  • Hemifacial spasm
  • Spasticity, for example after stroke or in multiple sclerosis
  • Focal hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
  • Headache, for example migraine
